Tim Swanson, my blogging pal and man-on-the-scene in China, hips us to the burgeoning underground rock n' roll scene in Beijing. You can find part one of CNN's video report on this underground music scene in the above link at Tim's blog.
Being a follower of both rock n' roll and cultural trends, I decided to head on over to the CNN website and dig up the rest of the clips from this televised report. Have a look:
Sidenote: I'll admit that I was interested to know more about lyrics in Chinese rock music, but the interviewer seemed to press this issue a little too much; it made her seem like a total outsider and a bit of a narc. Interesting to see the musicians' responses to these questions and others, they seemed very charming and thoughtful.

Music news: John's Children, Chicago live music, and more
Here's what's going on in the world of Trader Rock:
1. So Many Records recently did an excellent post on '60s rock n' roll band John's Children.
Record collectors and those interested in Marc Bolan's pre-T.Rex work will find this to be a very interesting post. Plus, I got to hear some more of those hard-to-find John's Children tunes, which were excellent.
2. Went to see some live bands at Schubas last night with Trader Luke, (aka "douchebag trader"). Via Audio, Yacht, and Chairlift were sharing the bill.
It had been a while since I'd been out to see any live acts, and in fact I didn't know anything about the bands we were going to see. Ended up liking them all, especially the night's first two acts, Via Audio and Yacht. Yacht's set was easily the high-energy climax of the evening; those kids know how get the crowd moving with their danceable, electronic "2000s style grunge" music.
Promise to have more on these new groups in the days ahead. The kids on YouTube were right: there is some good music out there these days, you just have to go out and find it.
3. Stereogum recommends The Best Show on WFMU. I haven't heard it yet, but will have to listen to some of their programs soon.
Listener-supported WFMU is in the final push of its fundraising marathon tonight, so check out their programs and give them a pledge if you are so inclined!
4. Old folks review Young Jeezy and Animal Collective.

Music news: The Nerves, Steve Jones, and more
A few cool things I found while browsing through the music blogosphere recently. Hope you'll find something worthwhile here too.
1. Steve Jones (Sex Pistols guitarist and rock radio dj) is without a radio gig for the moment, due to LA's Indie 103.1 radio station recently folding. Bad economy and all that...
For those who'd like to hear Steve's show (I understand it had a loyal following in LA), I checked around and you can find archived programs of Jonesy's Jukebox at the Indie 103.1 site, as well as this Blip.tv link.
2. 365 rpm (Hat tip: Post Punk Tumblr) hips us to the rock n' roll brilliance of The Nerves, and the little-known fact that "Hanging on the Telephone" (a tune made famous by Blondie) is actually a Nerves original.
3. So Many Records has some cool things to share re: Iggy Pop, Fleetwood Mac, and Glasvegas.
Definitely check out this blog; I came in via search to a post on Dave Dee, Dozy, Beeky, Mick and Tich and was completely sold after checking out all the great posts on the home page. This guy's got a lot of rock n' roll stories to boot!
4. Mr. Obscure has turned me on to some interesting stuff lately, including songs from the Venus In Fur's 1986 LP, Real Moral Fibre. I've managed to find one song from this rather hard to find record up on YouTube and hope to hear more in the future.
Check out the MP3's found in the white scroll box. It's updated every month, though from what I gather by looking around at this very unconventional Blogger site, there doesn't seem to be a post archive. But you will find song descriptions and links to more music blogs further down the page.

New music links added
Time to get started on building the Trader Rock link list.
I've added a few new music resources to the "Music Blogs" sidebar column, so we'll have a growing list of sites for you to check out. Here's a quick rundown on the sites added so far:
1. All Music Guide - Excellent resource for music reviews and artist info, discographies. I'm especially fond of the album reviews by Stephen Thomas Erlewine and Steve Huey, and in fact most of the reviewers seem top notch. Also home to the Allmusic Blog.
2. Technicolor Web of Sound - 1960s Psychedelic rock n' roll web radio station. Great playlist, and a lot of fun to listen to (check out the period radio ads played in between songs). Everything from Cream and Small Faces to lesser-known acts like The Birds (Ronnie Wood's group) and The Peanut Butter Conspiracy!
3. Beyond the Beat Generation - Another kick ass site focusing on '60s rock and roll, specifically underground rock of the period. They stream the music in a format called Shoutcast which I was able to play on Real Player, but the site suggests Winamp and a couple other media players as ideal options.
4. Kim Fowley's Underground Garage - Kim Fowley plays rock n' roll records new and old, while spicing up the playlist with great between-songs patter and his rather unique outlook on life in general. A personal favorite.
5. Little Steven's Underground Garage - The Sirius garage rock show that spawned offshoot shows hosted by Kim Fowley (see above) and others like Joan Jett, Andrew Loog Oldham, and more. I think you may have to register (free) to hear Steven van Zandt's show, but look around and check out the site.
